If you can recall, US President Donald Trump publicly announced that he is planning to bring jobs back to America for Americans. This particular statement from the President caused fright to the Philippines’ business process outsourcing companies since Americans cover up to 70% of these companies' customer base. “Though shall not fear”, according to the US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, the business processing outsourcing industry in the country will continue to do well even with President Trump’s policies. The US Representatives Trip to Cebu
As the US envoy went to Cebu on Thursday to speak with the members of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, they have agreed that it is too early to predict the impact of the US policies on our outsourcing companies since the policy is not being implemented yet. Sung Kim said, “There is no need for unnecessary alarm. US companies continue to enjoy their operations here due to the Philippines’ young, competent, smart, and hard-working population as well as the strong cultural affinity between the two countries.” Although the policies are not yet employed by the US government, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority headed by Director General Charito Plaza report that much American information technology and business process outsourcing companies are putting their extension plans on hold as they wait for clearer policies coming from President Trump himself and this has been the case since January this year. Upcoming Aggressive Expansion Despite the pending policy, the BPO industry stakeholders here in the Philippines continue to look at the bright side as leaders foretelling job generations in this sector over the next six years as they aim for a high-value growth with more aggressive expansion taking place outside Metro Manila. This prediction is possible as the country is experiencing a strong economic growth and with a huge talent pool, the BPO industry in the Philippines is expected to rapidly grow 1.6 times faster than the current global growth of 6% during President Rodrigo Duterte’s term. Besides the Washington policy, Sung Kim saw automation as a threat to the BPO industry not only here in the Philippines but worldwide. To address the rising automation issue, industry leaders are encouraged to invest in a workforce with higher value skills which are more difficult for automation to replace. As his meeting with the AmCham in Cebu ended, Kim assured that the US will still continue to partner with the Philippines’ BPO companies. Hence, they will continue to look for more ways to increase foreign investments and simplify business regulations.

This is due to the fact that the employees themselves find it hard to develop and follow their own healthy diet. According to Forbes, the rates of obesity of adults in the US alone already hit the 35.7% last 2010 from 2000’s 30.5%. Healthcare Insurances With this noticeable epidemic, big companies have realized that they have a big part on this issue too. Hence, companies, especially in the BPO industry, have started providing health insurances for their employees that will help them and their employees to manage their healthcare. The usual health care cost includes managing their blood pressure, heart diseases, asthma, and other chronic health conditions that can affect their work. Are you the boss or the business owner? You must be enjoying the fruits of your labor right now as you can see clearly that all your hard work pays off. However, one of the most common things that high profile businessmen experience is the fear of losing control. You’ve dedicated your time and energy to build your own business, generated clients, gained revenues, and increased your monthly income and yet it’s not enough. You need to hire people that will handle some of your workload so you can focus on generating more clients while managing them. It’s time to find the future team leaders of your company that will help you lead your business to bigger achievements. But first, there are important things that you need to do. Know Your Limits Even if you want to expand your business and increase your revenue, you can’t get all the work done alone. Indeed, “no man is an island” especially in the business industry. You might find it hard at first to designate positions, works, and your trust but you need the best people out there. If you want to keep your business growing, having a mindset packed with the right hiring strategies can help you find a future team leader in your company. If you want to build a productive team, you stay away from the so called bozo explosion. The bozo explosion hinders a company from growing healthy by hiring “okay” supervisors to ensure that their position is secured. Then, these “okay” supervisors hire inefficient managers to make sure they won’t feel intimidated until the virus goes on and on up to the last recruit. In the end, your business will be filled with people who lack the high-quality skills, and the same drive to achieve your goal. Set aside the intimidating effect of an applicant if you see his or her great potential in the business. The best employees should inspire you not just because of their impressive resumes and affiliations, but also because of their personality. Return the Favor At the same time, you have to set a clear definition of your business’ goal together with their role. Even the smartest employees can get lost if you yourself don’t know every twist and turn of your business because you and your business’ goal should also inspire them. You should become a mentor to your chosen leaders, not just a boss because business should be a two-way process. Help them achieve their goals too as they help you achieve your goals in mind. Hiring people is necessary if you want to expand your business. Depending on your business’ demand, you can hire full-time or part-time employees to fill in the jobs in your business. When it comes to finding team leaders, always think about their future roles as leaders. Setting a high standard is a must but don’t forget to become their mentor as well. With these, you can find and keep the best employees that will strive to drive their team members to have a dynamic career. So throw your rod now because your future team leaders await you. There is no doubt about it, the Philippines is one of the fastest growing BPO hubs in the world. Business Mirror even claimed Filipinos as the best workers worldwide may it be in the field of education, medical, technology, or other fields. Filipinos stand out among other work forces. When the BPO industry was introduced in the Philippines, more Filipino workers have found a new way to use and improve their skills in a more competitive environment. But is it true that the Philippines’ competitive position faces trouble nowadays? Source: www.bloncampus.co In spite of the huge leap in the BPO sector that Filipino workers have made, experts that joined the forum organized by the Pearson London Chamber of Commerce and Industry have agreed that the country’s IT sector must be improved. A British consultant has warned that the Philippines’ IT sector is losing its skills that are required in the fourth industrial revolution.
Hence, the Philippines position on top might be really in trouble if the country won’t be able to keep up with the current demands in the industry called the fourth industrial revolution. When the ITBAP (Information Technology and Business Process Association) conducted an estimate, they found out that there will be up to six million of people who will be affected if the Philippines would not be able to enhance the entire workforce’s level of skills most especially in the fields that use higher mathematics. Thus, IT-BPAP executive director Penny Bongato stated in the conducted forum that, “The world is evolving. Technology is evolving. The digital organizations as well as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation and the cloud is affecting the way we do things,” “Most of the things now are in the cloud. If you are an employer and you don’t allow your employees to be socially connected, you will have a problem with engagement.” Penny Bongato also stated that sales jobs in the BPO industry will be slowing down in the next years. However, this issue is still way too far from eliminating the Philippines in the BPO industry’s mid-skill and high-skill jobs in the next six years. This is confirmed as Penny Bongato added that mid to high-skill jobs in the BPO industry that include IT, call center skills, game development, health informatics, shared services, and animation will double or even triple. The revolution is here and there’s no stopping now as the physical and digital worlds fuse to come up with the fourth industrial revolution. The best solution now is for the Philippines to produce more competitive and highly-skilled graduates. The BPO industry in the Philippines started around the early 2004 and has been one of the thriving industries since it was introduced. The country is able to turn out thousands of college graduates who were unable to get decent jobs and the BPO industry was able to absorb a lot of these graduates.
Equipped with a neutral English accent, these graduates are able to cope up with the Western ears, and the culture of being helpful had been a great asset to customer service. Although the BPO industry was able to provide employment for thousand of graduates, there is an ongoing concern about issues on health and safety for those who are working in this industry. There have been studies conducted that the BPO industry ranked high for attrition due to health reasons, findings that call center agents got sleeping disorders at 83% compared to other industries with an average of 39.5%, voice loss of 8.5% as against 3.9%, ear problems at 8.5%, eyesight problems 10.6% and digestive disorders for 14.9%. There is a perceived need for medical assistance in order to identify the employees’ problems and measures of reducing them and the managements’ output concerning the importance of pre-employment, periodic medical examination and the need for providing counseling sessions to tackle job stresses. There are other related issues such as loss of identity, drug abuse, isolation and work pressure brought about by long work hours, high work targets, and permanent night shifts. Eye problems, digestive disorders, and voice loss are some of the other complaints received from call center workers. These complaints had come from the nature of work and odd timings where people had to be continuously on call for 8 hours excluding 1-hour lunch break and 2-15 minute breaks. They had to read pre-scripted spiels on the phone to irate customers from across the globe, had to pass metrics in order to upgrade salaries and hikes. Agents had to be multitasking, able to talk, listen and watch at the same time. Agents on the graveyard shift require adjusting their biological clock and social practices which are the reason for a major cause of health-related and social problems. Eye problems such as soreness, blurred vision, dryness, headache, light sensitivity is now known as computer vision syndrome, while voice loss is known as teacher syndrome, which may lead to permanent loss of voice or its chronic form inability to speak (dysphonia), creakiness, irritating cough, inability to modulate, pain, and breathing difficulties. In order to assist BPO workers concerning their health, the BPO industry should have more explicit, detailed and relevant regulations and guidance specific to this type of industry. Health risk assessments should be provided before pre-employment and periodically after being hired should be conducted especially for eye and audiometric tests. Health workers and availability of medicines should be provided to BPO workers when needed. |
